Neither did I, until I came across \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.purewastetextiles.com\/\"\u003EPure Waste Textiles\u003C\/a\u003E two months ago. I think this is major news for the fashion industry, major, as in B I G. This is a long post, but please read it (and share it) so you understand why I´m so psyched about this.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhen I heard of Pure Waste Textiles (made by the same people behind recycle accessory label \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.costo.fi\/\"\u003ECosto\u003C\/a\u003E) and their brand new recycle fabrics, I asked them for an interview. I have to admit I was pretty sceptic about their promises since 100% recycled fabrics are a bit of an unfulfilled dream in the fashion industry. Consumers might think that this product exist already as they have seen denim marked with labels \"made with 100% recycled denim\", but it has so far meant that the product has some recycled material in it (which is 100% recycled) but there is also normal materials in the mix. This is marked in the wash label, but not many look at it close enough. So I asked PW a bunch of tough questions about their ethics, production methods ect. They answered everything correctly, everything. But I am no engineer. I wanted a professional second opinion, so I contacted estonian eco fashion pioneer and eco fashion \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.reetaus.com\/phd\"\u003EPhD\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.reetaus.com\/\"\u003EReet Aus\u003C\/a\u003E. She met with the PW-team to see if they were for real. They passed again and she was very happy to have met them. So I have confirmation. 100% recycled denim exists and it is a Finnish invention.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2BV146dI0Jg\/Urd27hBVciI\/AAAAAAAAJXA\/I2oqIx17dN0\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2BV146dI0Jg\/Urd27hBVciI\/AAAAAAAAJXA\/I2oqIx17dN0\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim.jpg\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBut why is this so big? For four reasons: the denim and other recycled fabrics that PW produces, require (1) zero water and (2) zero chemicals. When you add that (3) the raw material itself has been harvested from industry cut waste and spinning waste (= recycled) and (4) the labour is also payed well and monitored by the PW-people constantly.\u0026nbsp;When you consider all these facts,\u0026nbsp;you pretty much have the perfect product \/ fabric by all counts. It is so important that this innovation comes from a fabric supplier as this means that the product can be sold to a number of clothing brands (instead of it being just one clothing brand or one collection) making eco fashion from it. Get my drift? Imagine Levi, Acne, Diesel, H\u0026amp;M.. all using their recycled denim and making t-shirts from their recycled jersey. This is truly the start of a recycle fashion revolution in mass quantities.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBefore any of you educated fashionistas yell OVERPRODUCTION, I´ll agree with you. Yes, it would be best not to produce so much clothes in the first place and I seriously hope labels realize the quickest way to make their label greener is to literately skip a couple of collections. If the consumer wants to do their part, best would be to buy quality, take care of their clothes and repair them so they would stay in circulation as long as possible.\u0026nbsp;Cutting down production quantities and focusing on quality instead of quantity is also my first option for a greener fashion industry, but when denims need to be made, PW´s recycle fabrics are a fantastic option.\u0026nbsp;Let´s go deeper into the four reasons why I think PW is so brilliant.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-i01G9lj95IE\/Urd27mlLroI\/AAAAAAAAJW8\/We3XtquWY3Y\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_cottonwaste.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-i01G9lj95IE\/Urd27mlLroI\/AAAAAAAAJW8\/We3XtquWY3Y\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_cottonwaste.jpg\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E1. THE RAW MATERIAL IS ORIGINALLY WASTE = RECYCLED\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EPure Waste uses fabric cut waste from Chinese denim factories and cotton carding waste from spinning factories. In the traditional cutting process leaves off 15% of the original fabric as scraps. This material is grinned and spun to make the recycled denim. Every year 4500 million meters (30 000 feet)\u0026nbsp;of denim fabric is produced so the 15% is roughly 675 million meters of fabric wasted. Using other brands waste to make the fabric, it means that the PW-denim has a non-existent environmental impact on growing cotton which makes it many times better than for example newly grown organic cotton. PW`s jersey comes from factories in India made in the same methods.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E2. NO FRESH WATER USED IN PRODUCTION\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis is the innovation part right here. PW has done something that no other recycle fabric manufacturer has been able to do before - \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.purewastetextiles.com\/recycling-process\/\"\u003Ea zero-water spinning process for denim\u003C\/a\u003E. We hear a lot of talk about carbon footprint, but I believe it is our \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.waterfootprint.org\/?page=files\/home\"\u003Ewater footprint\u003C\/a\u003E that we should worry about. Air purifies itself quite quickly, but we cannot live with out fresh water daily. All life on land is dependent upon it. We see our water use as we shower, wash our clothes, flush the toilet, water our garden and cook food. But we also use a lot of \"invisible water\", which is all fresh water imported from other countries, in the consumer product and food we buy. If you ask me, I think the water footprint should be marked in all products so people would realize just how much they consume. One pair of jeans takes 8 000 - 10 000 liters (2600 gallons) of fresh water to make and the denim fabric with in that 3000 liters (800 gallons).\u0026nbsp;When you count that 1,5 meters of fabric is needed to make one pair and every year 3000 million pairs in total to make jeans, you start to understand the amount of fresh water that goes into the making of these products and that would be saved if the production method would be transformed to use less or no water at all. Denim fabric production is mainly focused in countries where fresh water is an agricultural luxury. It should be used in growing food and not making clothes. When buying denim made in far countries, we pay very little to spend their precious natural resources. In the future, when you buy a pair made from PW´s denim, the water footprint will be 800 gallons smaller per pair.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uMnR9zkpCXo\/Urd28SScvfI\/AAAAAAAAJXU\/d59zEFOwxZM\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim3.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uMnR9zkpCXo\/Urd28SScvfI\/AAAAAAAAJXU\/d59zEFOwxZM\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim3.jpg\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E3. NO CHEMICALS USED IN PRODUCTION\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ETraditional cotton is used to grow with a lot of pesticides. Also the fabric production process takes a lot of chemicals. When production is focused in countries with a poor legislation in environmental control this is a bad combination. PW has taken out chemicals entirely from their fabric production line. This makes a huge positive impact on the factories environmental effect in the nearby land and water areas and also protects the workers. I´m sure many denim companies thought this would be impossible.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E4. LABOUR IS ETHICAL AND MONITORED\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMost companies just check up on their suppliers factories once or twice a year, but PW has full control of their factories and they have Finnish staff present at all times to make sure things are done their way. Workforce is payed well and the work is safer due to lack of chemical use. Normally I would not be happy about fabric production in China or India, but if you take into count the facts 1-4 it becomes irrelevant where in the world the goods are actually made. PW has fixed al the worst problem areas in production coming from these countries.\u0026nbsp;Logistically it is also smart as the raw cotton waste originates from these countries. This way it does not have to transported far, so the environmental impact of logistics is also smaller. With the labour issues cleared, they also set a positive example to other factories in the area to do the same.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-T06fJZyIYlg\/Urd28QKb7vI\/AAAAAAAAJXs\/NXIQ8xQHVGs\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim2.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-T06fJZyIYlg\/Urd28QKb7vI\/AAAAAAAAJXs\/NXIQ8xQHVGs\/s1600\/Pure_Waste_Textiles_denim2.jpg\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\"BUT IT´S JUST REGULAR DENIM RIPPED AND WEAVED INTO A NEW FORM...\"\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhen I wrote about PW \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/outilespyy.com\/2013\/12\/21\/100-kierratysdenim-on-suomalainen-keksinto\/\"\u003Eto my Finnish blog yesterday\u003C\/a\u003E, someone commented that they don´t really see this being an improvement as it is \"just regular denim ripped and weaved into a new form\". I wish things would be this simple or black and white. First of all the terminology is correct. The 15% of cut waste and spinning waste that PW uses as raw material is waste, so the PW-fabric can be called and is recycled. Calling a material waste does not just mean that is needs to be made only from so called post-consumer waste (second hand jeans). Waste is also generated throughout the production phases. Using post-consumer waste as material is extremely difficult as the material is very uneven, contains multiple fibers and is sewn to a form (has to be taken apart manually). All the recycled fashion solutions I´ve seen done from post-consumer waste are only for small production or DIY projects. PW´s materials and products can be mass produced. Other major foreign producers include Netherlands, Russia, China and Canada. There has been many news and videos in the 90´s about the cruel and poor living conditions of these animals, but the discussion died in the 00´swhen luxury fashions became in demand again. They still are. \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.turkistarhatonsuomi.fi\/\"\u003EIn 2012 a group in Finland\u003C\/a\u003E raised the discussion back on the table weather Finland should also join countries like England, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland, that have prohibited fur farming completely. Here´s my take on this issue. Fur sales dropped drastically after the lavish 1980´s (propably most due to early 90´s depression, but also agressive \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/\"\u003EPETA\u003C\/a\u003E and Fur Is Dead campaigning) but have made new record sales in the 2000's because followed celebs and bunch of other starlets are again parading themselves in new on-season fur coats, fueling the trend and inspiring a whole new fast fashion generation. Not, unless we are talking about fur types where the fur has been hunted or collected (road kill). Farm grown fur is def not ehtical. Like many industrially made things these days, the production method for fur is sick, just like many other modern production types involving live animals. I prefer if the current fur production would be stopped complitely in Finland (preferably worldwide!) as some of the farmers obviously have no idea how to run their businesses ethically and morally even with clear guidelines set by EU on how animals should be treated. But on other levels and sides the fur debate is much more colorful than just black and white.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003EWhere does vintage fit into the fur debate? The rights and wrongs of wearing fur coats from the Forties, Fifties, Sixties and Seventies is an ethical grey area. Thousands of fur coats hang like guilty secrets in the back of our wardrobes, passed down from grandmothers and mothers who wore mink and sable in good faith long before we started talking about animal rights. Should we condemn vintage fur in the same way that today's designers attract criticism for using pelts? After all, recycling an old fur coat means that no animals have to die today to satisfy our desire for this luxury look. Personally \u003Cb\u003EI don´t condem wearing fur if it is recycled.\u003C\/b\u003E I see no point in making something new when the real material already exists, is available secondhand and is very good quality. I myself have three fur coats, all bought used or inherited. I feel that they are perfect for eveningwear in the freezing temperatures of Scandic winter (we go as down as -25 Celsius which is -15 Fahrenheit. I´ve had them over ten years and propably will for another twenty before recycling them. If kept well, fur garments are good for 100 years which makes them very eco and sustainable in a way as they have a much longer lifecycle than for example cotton or most manmade fibres. Not just from material production perspective, but also from the environmental side and how long a garment will stay in use. These are also important aspects of defining if a garment is green or not. Fake fur might not cause any harm to the animals, but what about sweat shop labour? I have not seen any fast fashion companies labeling their fake minks \"cruelty free\" meaning fair wages to the people who made them.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003EFake fur is also made mostly from polyester which is oil based polymers. Production of polyester and many other man made fibers are very polluting to the environment to produce and to transport, if made in countries with out a strict environmental laws. Logistics for example are average 30% of environmental effects. The British Fur Trade Association found fake fur was responsible for 50 per cent of our toxic nitrous oxide emissions and that it takes a gallon of oil to produce three fake fur coats. In response, the University of Michigan hit back with research suggesting that it took 20 times the amount of energy to make a real fur coat rather than a faux version. While there is evidence to suggest that farmed and fake fur both cause damage to the environment, wearing vintage fur - which has already been processed - has no additional costs to the planet. Second hand (new or old) just beats anything newly made on all counts when it comes to the entire production and recycling cycle of an garment. It´s an easy topic to bitch about. But what about down? \u003Cb\u003EHow many of us check that the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-2240096\/Feathers-ripped-birds-backs-gaping-wounds-sewn-pain-relief-The-barbaric-cost-winter-coat.html\"\u003Edown jacket they buy\u003C\/a\u003E (WARNING. links to graphic images) has an ethical certificate?\u003C\/b\u003E Consumers should also read about down production and \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.edfa.eu\/gb\/efaq.htm\"\u003EEDFA\u003C\/a\u003E, which is The European Down and Feather Association. Their certificates make sure that the feathers and down used in clothes is made right. If wearing a fur coat raises discussion on how ethical are your fashion values, so should wearing a down jacket. Again, using \/ buying second hand down jackets just beats anything newly made so there is no need for plucking any more birds for their feathers.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003EIf you´re a vegan, you say no to all animal based foods and products. It´s cool. If the production cycle is monitored properly, there are any options for manmade technical fibers and winter wear that have no animal in it. But what about the rest of us? Many argue that even using second hand and vintage furs we support the trend of using new fur. I disagree. For many years I did not eat industrially produced meat at all (no cow, chicken, pork, turkey.. ect.) but did eat fowl and game. It is said that if I wear a vintage fur coat, the people seeing me wearing it don´t know if it is now or not and therefore I support new fur. I think this question is wrongly put. When I was eating reindeer at a restaurant, nobody knew about my no-industry-meat-policy. And frankly I think it is none of their business. I am not trying to effect the minds of all the people I meet during my day. It is my personal choice. If someone asks me or complements my jacket, I tell them it is vintage. The same goes for my smoking. I´m not responsible of what others do from my example, if they do not question it. If somebody starts smoking just because they see me do it, that´s just plain stupid. So with this logic, if they see me wearing (my second hand) fur does not give anyone the excuse to go and buy a new one, fake or real. I work for a second hand chain in Finland (\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.fidainternational.fi\/fida-2nd-hand-shops\/\"\u003EFida International\u003C\/a\u003E) and my heart cries when I see clothes people donate. 90% is just crap and cannot be re-sold anymore because of pilling, dirt, tears or just general poor quality. Most of the textiles given to charity are just junk. I wish sometimes consumers would come see how it looks like on the other end and not buying themselves a conscience by saying \"I´ll just donate it.\" as most of it will not be recyclable. After thinking about this for a long time I came to the conclusion that genuine vintage fur and other vintage winter jackets are a quality. They last forever and keep me warm, so I have not had to buy a new winter jacket (I live in freezing Helsinki, Finland) in 8 years. \u003Cb\u003EA quality fur coat lasts up to a 100 years if kept well. \u003C\/b\u003ETherefore just the usage time makes it ecological when you compare it to regular winter coats and how many would you need for that time period. I mean, what other garment you can use daily for three generations? If production of new is stopped and the prices of secondhand furs rise, would this luxurious (recycled) material finally have the diamond status it should, but made sustainably. Like a rare piece of fashion antique. Secondhand stores around the world have more than enough of fur from past years to supply fashion industry for a lifetime. If supply for new fur is stopped or rapidly decreased wouldn´t it mean that the value of secondhand fur raises and fashion industry has to seek new ways to design fur through recycling and reusing it? Fur differs from other fashion materials. It can be used to the last piece unlike regular fabrics or leather. It´s kinda like second hand \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zero-waste_fashion\"\u003Ezero waste\u003C\/a\u003E. Surprisingly even with the current eco and recycle boom that´s been going on the couple of years there are still very few fashion brands that use recycled fur in their collections and too many that use new fur. Canadian \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.harricana.qc.ca\/\"\u003EHarricana\u003C\/a\u003E by designer Mariouche Gagné bases all their collections on recycled fur. Recycling fur into reusable products can be seen to make environmental sense. Harricana has been recycling vintage coats since 1994, turning Montreal's old fur coats into practical hats, mittens and skiwear for Canada's minus 40-degree winter temperatures. \"I think everything that is going to be thrown away should be reused, even if you don't believe in the original product,\" says Gagné. \"I've recycled more than 50,000 fur coats in 14 years. Hard to find, the quality is such crap that most of them do not survive for round II. Many charity shops are selling their winter wear in spring with discounts, so you can find a good deal for next fall if buying a new second hand coat is too much for your budget now. Ask around from family who has a coat they are not using. Store it always well (hanging, no folding, keep dry) no no little critters can get their teeth into it. Look on the inside. If the jacket is real vintage, the lining should be thick satin, there should be hand sewn ribbons and a pretty looking old school label from the maker.\u0026nbsp;I´m also on the lookout for any new ecological winter wear labels with an transparent supply chain.
