Safety pin couture

Safety pins must be the best thing ever invented for trashionistas and fashionistas. They are a quick fix to basically any type of fashion emergency (exept maybe your heel breaking off..) and they are a stylists best friend. The very first pins used for clothing date back to the 14th century BCE and were called fibula which was the attaching mechanism for brooches. The modern safety pin was the invention of Walter Hunt in 1849, the same guy who invented the sewing machine. On April 10, 1849, Walter Hunt was granted US patent #6,281 for his safety pin. Hunt's pin was made from one piece of wire, which was coiled into a spring at one end and a separate clasp and point at the other end, allowing the point of the wire to be forced by the spring into the clasp. It was the first pin to have a clasp and spring action and Hunt claimed that it was designed to keep fingers safe from injury - hence the name.

Safety pins can also be used in creating surfaces to clothing as the mighty Gareth Pugh showed us in Fall 2008. This runway outfits were covered all over in safetypins.

  1. I was in lust with those amazing Gareth Pugh creations, they must have been quite heavy to wear though.
I've always loved safety pins, not only because as a 70s child I rather enjoy the Punk dynamic they envoke but also cause they are so bleeding versatile, clever & cool.

  3. Kiitoksia. Toivottavasti kirjoitukseni inspiroivat luomaan uutta kierrätysmateriaaleista ja tekemään itse oman muotinsa.

Mun päiväduuni on toimistossa assarin hommissa. Eli istun tietokoneen ja puhelimen ääressä suurimman osan päivästä. :)
